Our Favorite Spring Image
This week’s winner is “Bearly Awake” by Jack Hunter, who cleverly uses the end of winter to show the arrival of spring. I’d have asked him to remove the bunny slippers — since they’re in the center of the picture, they distract you from connecting the bear with the newspapers. Also, in this day and age cigarettes on the magazine’s cover would instantly trigger angry letters. But I...

92 Funny Rites of Spring
> Thank you for all the wonderful submissions! This week, they’re all in one slideshow: the winner, 10 runner-ups (scroll over for my comments), then many of the other entries we received. If you submitted this week, please feel free to share your sketch on your own page. I believe artists can learn a lot from looking at each other’s process, so take a look. I would love to hear...

This Week's Theme: Spring
Spring has sprung! After the second warmest winter on record, the weather is getting even warmer. The trees around New York City have burst into early blooms and the streets are filled with bare legs and sandals. Spring is my favorite season - it’s filled with possibilities. So get sketching - I can’t wait to see your ideas.  - Eric Drooker - Peter De Sève - Kathy Osborn -...

The Winner: Even Robin Hood...
This image by Chee Yang Ong shows that even an artist in Malaysia can pick up on the American zeitgeist. In the year of Occupy Wall Street, redistribution is on everyone’s mind. It’s nice to see that even Robin Hood doesn’t escape the ordeal. Next week’s theme will be…greener. Greener than money, you say? Greener than Robin Hood? Tune in Monday to find out.

All The Little Piggy Banks
There were so many piggy banks in my inbox this week! Here are 5 - but note that there are two more in the runners-up. Why piggy banks?

50 images better than a Tax Refund
This week’s tax theme was tough - more than one person wrote in to say they had had difficulty generating ideas. But many of you found the time to put away your IRS paperwork and send us a few images. Here are 50 of the strongest - numbered for your convenience (not ranked). I’m interested to hear which of these you like best and why. If you’ve submitted for this week’s...

This Week's Theme: Taxes Due
Have you finished filing your taxes yet? In America, taxes are due on April 15th (It used to be March 15th, as you’ll see on the older covers below). It’s a moment when the entire country is brought together - we all suddenly have the same thing to complain about. Sharpen those #2 pencils, and send me your sketches! - Rea Irvin - Constantin Alajalov - Richard McGuire -...

Easter: The Winner!
This image by Julien Couty made me laugh. I grew up with Tintin - it’s famous everywhere in the world except the U.S.. That is, until recently - Steven Spielberg’s 3D movie just made Tintin into American cultural currency as well. I haven’t and probably won’t see the film, but I’m grateful to it for that. If you still don’t get this image, look here.

The Full Easter Basket
Wow! Who knew Easter would prove such a… (*ahem*) fertile topic. We received so many - and so many good - submissions that they can’t all fit in this slideshow. Here are 99 of the sketches. I’d be interested to hear which ones you like and why in the comments below (they’re numbered for your convenience). Thank you to everyone who submitted, it was once again inspiring to...

Spring Training: THE WINNER!
This image by Teresa Rodriguez elicited an “awww!” from enough people that it bumped to the top of the heap. It would please ALL baseball fans as well as those who don’t care about it at all.  It’s nice to find a sports image with such broad appeal.

Spring Training: Cream of the Crop
[scroll over the images for my comments] Here is the cream of the crop of the images I received last week. I didn’t post them sooner because these ideas were good enough that I held them for consideration as New Yorker covers. I hung these on the wall in my office, where I keep the images I’m thinking about, and so even though ultimately none of them were selected, they are in very...
