Frank Viva, winner of the 2012 Cybils Award for his TOON Book, A Trip to the Bottom of the World, will be speaking at the LA Times Festival of Books on Sunday April 21, at 12:30pm. It is on the Seeley G. Mudd Stage (SGM 124).

He is speaking on the panel “Children’s Books: Dynamically Drawn Stories.” The moderator for the event is Caryn Wiseman, and other panelists include two other great artists/authors, David Kirk and Chris Raschka.
If you’re in LA, don’t miss this rare chance to meet talented artists, and say hello for us.

Today’s TOON Spotlight is Israeli Illustrator Rutu Modan, author of the Eisner nominated TOON book, Maya Makes a Mess. Telling the story of Maya, a young, messy eater, invited to a fancy dinner party with the Queen, Maya Makes a Mess exhibits Modan’s trademark ligne claire drawing style and vibrant, graphic color schemes. Modan is best known for her politically driven, observational comics, as well as her autobiographical work and illustration. Maya Makes a Mess , her first children’s book, presents her work at its funniest and most accessible. On the TOON website, Maya Makes a Mess , Rutu talks about getting the idea from her daughter. Tackling touchy subjects like racial profiling, homelessness, and wealth distribution (à la Occupy movement), Lazar’s cartoons are ruthlessly contemporary, marked by a biting, flippant wit. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s a tremendous cartoonist, with beautiful ink washes and purposeful brush lines inspired by The New Yorker’s Peter Arno.

…and we started 2013 with this New Yorker cover by Chris Ware—kids going back to school post-Newton. Again I wonder: what is it going to take to get a ban on assault weapons? Is the answer more guns…but now in schools?

We must take action before another massacre. What are we waiting for?

Art did this New Yorker cover in 1993, when kids with guns could only be seen as an ironic exaggeration. Colombine happened in 1999, Newtown in 2012, nearly 20 years later. I share Art’s wish for 2013: no more!

But now talk is about having armed guards in schools… Seriously?

I shudder at what it’s going to take before we get a ban on assault weapons.

This week our Cool New Book is Shadow Atlas, a gorgeous, limited edition book from Nora Krug. The book, silk-screened, of which there are only 400 copies, is absolutely stunning, and details legends of ghosts from a variety of culture. If you want know more about the book, there’s a great interview with Nora, readable here.

This double Tilley by Seth was for the February super-Tuesday primary race, back in 2008. We published half the run with Clinton on top, the other half with Obama, and, amazingly enough, that matched the result of the voting that day… and stayed true till pretty much May or June of that year.
